5.11 Tactical Pants

They ain't for me. In many ways I love these pants.  They are very well made, nice thick material, but not heavy and, of course, the pockets.  Lots and lots of pockets, but the 5.11 pants I bought just don't work on my body.

When I bought the first pair of pants I tried on several sizes.  The first size I tried on fit at the waist, but were too short, so I tried on bigger sizes to see if those sizes allowed for more length, they didn't.  I thought no big deal.  I will look like a goob, but I needed something other than jeans and  I was willing to sacrifice a little aesthetics for function.

The pants seemed ok until I started wearing them in action. They ride up on me terribly and aside from the extreme discomfort of their 65% polyester/35% cotton seam riding up my backside and my crotch (my daughters favorite word beside groin), I am also not willing to give up that much aesthetics.

My husband was able to find me a pair of longs and again I was hopeful that this meant everything was a little more roomy, but they weren't.  Especially once I put all my gear on, things get very uncomfy. It's back to the drawing board and today at the range I will be wearing my world famous Johnny Cash black jeans with fake rhinestones on the pockets.  And I will be Looking good.

  1. My problem with the 5.11 Tac pants are the belt loops, which seem to be setup in the exact wrong spot for IWB holsters and the cavernous back pocket in which my wallet falls all the way to the back of my leg.

I've found that I like the TruSpec pants the best, but those only come in four colors of which one is black. I'm not gonna wear black Tac pants... there's only so much of the mall ninja look I'm going for.

    1. The belt loops are a pain! I am going to look into the brand you mentioned. Eventually, I have to find something that works.

  2. I prefer Tru-Spec BDU pants. I like the ones they make in 100% cotton the best. For some reason though, they are available only in khaki, black and camo colors (at least where I have bought mine) and not in blue. You can get their cotton/polyester blend pants in all those colors including blue. For the price, about $25 a pair for their BDU pants, they are a great deal. They come in small/medium and large waste sizes and various leg lengths (that vary by waste size, for instance large regular pants have a 32" inseam). They are available in regular and long sizes. I used to get mine from SportsmansGuide.com but may look for a new source due to problems with their customer service. If you need info on Tru-Spec BDU clothing, it is available at the Atlanco.com site, Atlanco is the manufacturer. Search for BDU.

They also offer a lot of other pant styles that would be suitable for the range. Note, in their BDU pants, with the fabric blend, it is 60/40 cotton/poly, you can also get other BDU type pants from them that are 65/35 poly/cotton.

Their BDU pants usually can be found well under the MSRP.

    All the best,
    Glenn B

  3. I forgot to mention:

If you visit the Atlanco site, make sure to look at their sizing chart at http://www.atlanco.com/pages/SizingChart.aspx.
note that inseam length is in white just below the chart area.

    1. Thanks for all the inside scoop. I will check these out. I don't care about color as I only wear them on the range.

  4. My daughter has the same problem, and she (as a paramedic) is STILL trying to find good pants. Bottom line, there really aren't any manufacturers that make tactical pants for women!

    1. I think Tru-Spec makes BDUs for women; at least they have separate women's charts for sizing.

  5. Carhartt B151FAT! Don't know if they fit womenfolk though but they're great for guys.

  6. Well, guess I'll be the "flyer" here - I really like 5.11 Tac pants. Hold everything just fine. But, in fairness, I probably have a bit more "realestate" than the ladies here. Heavy Sigh. I carry in a Comp-Tac Minotaur at the 4:30 and all seems good.

    1. I think 5.11 are probably great for most people. The company seems to be good, I just can't find a fit for me.

  7. If you find tactical pants that work for women, do tell. I'm 5'7" and 195 lbs (not a fragile flower) and have never been able to find any.

  8. Well, there's usually not one solution that is tailored to all people. Personally...I just wear the $15-$20 Wrangler cargo pants (khaki) from Target. They're comfy, durable (you'd be surprised what sort of things an IT guy has to do to install security cameras or run cabling, etc), and have plenty of pocket room, and fit (as eiaftino stated it) "ample realestate" fairly well. *sigh* I ~am~ trying to sell off some of that real-estate...really....

    1. I agree. I have pretty much been a jeans kind of gal. Never wore cargo or tac pants before, so it will just take some time to find what works for my body.

  9. My wife's solution has been to buy men's tactical pants -- and that's now expanded to the point where she buys mostly men's pants/jeans/slacks. Her take: why shouldn't I be able to spec out pants by waist size, inseam length, and rise? Why should I be stuck to a size xx, that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer?
Might try the men's side of the store -- to see if you can a fit that's right for you....

    1. I might try that. I am tall and thin, but I have hips. Not like large hips, just I am a woman, so my hip bones are larger than a mans. I wonder if I could get a size small enough, but that allowes for a female shape...I intend to find out. Thanks!

  10. I don't have anything special I wear to the range just my Columbia shorts. When it's fall again and starting to cool off, I do want to invest in some army camo pants.

Would like swat type pants work for you? Or are they to much like the Tactical pants or are they the tactical pants you already have. I never looked at the tag on what certain styles were called I just pick them up and go UMM they might work. But I haven't actually bought any yet.

    1. I am not picky really. I want pants that allow for more movement than jeans and have more pockets. Brand name, color, don't care as long as the quality is good and they are comfy. It's like the holster thing...just have to keep trying until I find what works for me:)

  11. Bummer. Did you get the women's cut ones? I know that made a huge difference for me. I do wish they were a bit roomier through the thigh, but I really do love them. Of course, I'm smack-dab between sizes right now, one size is way too big, but the next size down is a touch too tight. Guess I have to keep running :)

  12. And my issue with length is the exact opposite of yours. At 5' tall, I really should hem everything. But I'm lazy, so I either roll them or "cowboy hem" them.

  13. I can't find "normal" pants that fit, much less anything utilitarian. I'm shortwaisted, long-legged.

I once called Land's End to see if they had petite pants with a 36" inseam. At least they put my on hold until they were done laughing.

  14. I understand the whole pants thing. I'm tall 5 foot 8 ish, but my legs aren't that long. Long enough to work and get whistled at by the occassional truckload of nearsighted landscape workers, but still short for my height. I usually have to hem pants to get them to fit.

I just wanted to wish you a happy Mother's Day. I hope you and your family have a wonderful day.

I emailed you already, but thanks for the good wishes. Right backatcha!

  15. LOL, I wear 511 and Proper, but I buy the mens pants so I can get the length I need, have room in the waist for my IWB and still fit in the hip. Knowing you are quite slender, vice me, I don't know if that would work for you, but it gives me the extra room in the waist for the gun, and gives me the pockets for everything!

Good luck (great to see you)

  16. I found men's cargo pants at Walmart for 18.97. They fit much better than the 511 tactical pants, men's or women's.

  17. I don't know if they'll work for you, or not, but I got a pair of excellent working man's pants from Duluth Trading.

The Women's side of their website is "here.

The pants I got are in their Fire Hose lineup, which are available for women, as well.

On mine, the waist seems a bit smaller that I'm used to in other brands, but I also carry a bit too much real estate...

  18. I'm an avid hiker and always carry with a IWH. You might try looking at hiking pants - they're well made, tough, you can find ones with stretch and they breathe really well. I'm 6' and can find tall sizes in brands like Mountain Hardware and Columbia.
